The Joint Standing Committee on Implementation of the National Redress Scheme (NRS) is currently finalising its report and recommendations regarding the future operation of the National Redress Scheme. This work follows the Committee's inquiry and extensive consideration of evidence, submissions, public hearings and detailed information provided by the Department of Social Services regarding the administration and operation of the Scheme.
At the same time, the Statutory Independent Eight-Year Review of the National Redress Scheme, led by Mr Michael Manthorpe PSM, has been underway and is expected to conclude later this year. The Committee has closely monitored the progress of this review and recognises the important role it will play in informing the ongoing operations of the Scheme.
The Committee's recommendations will be informed by a broad range of evidence gathered throughout the inquiry which commenced on 30th October 2025. The Committee received 54 submissions, including 36 from organisations and government agencies, and heard from survivors with lived experience, advocacy organisations, support services, government representatives and other stakeholders. This evidence, together with information provided by the Department of Social Services and findings from the Independent Review, will assist in shaping recommendations aimed at improving the effectiveness, accessibility and responsiveness of the Scheme.
As Chair of the Inquiry, I have been committed to ensuring the Committee develops a comprehensive understanding of the Scheme's operation, including the challenges, barriers and opportunities for improvement identified by participants. Particular attention has been given to understanding what is required to provide meaningful, survivor-centred and trauma-informed redress for those the Scheme was established to support and how to process the growing number of applications.
The Committee expects to table its report in the coming months. The report will contain comprehensive recommendations reflecting the evidence received throughout the inquiry and addressing key issues identified by survivors, support organisations and frontline service providers. These recommendations will be directed towards ensuring the Scheme better meets the needs and expectations of those seeking redress.
The Committee recognises the significance of both the Inquiry and the Independent Review and sincerely thanks all individuals and organisations that have contributed their time, expertise and lived experience. Their contributions have been invaluable in informing the Committee's work. We look forward to sharing the Committee's findings and recommendations once the report is tabled and contributing to the continued improvement of the National Redress Scheme for survivors.
